Vinland Saga adapts Makoto Yukimura's action-adventure viking manga, which he originally launched in Weekly Shounen Magazine in April 2005. before moving on to Monthly Afternoons in December of that year. Kodansha published the 24th volume on October 23 last year, with the 25th volume slated for release on July 21. Vinland Saga has a cumulative 5.5 million copies of compiled volumes in circulation.
The first three episodes of the television anime debuted on NHK General in Summer 2019 and ended with 24 episodes in the Fall of that year, adapted the first eight volumes. Amazon's Prime Video platform streams the first episode before television broadcasts and holds exclusive streaming rights for the show worldwide.
Shuuhei Yabuta is directing the anime series at Wit Studio, featuring character designs by Takahiko Abiru. Hiroshi Seko ( Mob Psycho 100 ) is handling series composition and is also writing the script with Kenta Ihara ( Youjo Senki ). Yutaka Yamada ( Great Pretender ) composes the score.
Kodansha Manga licensed the manga in English in October 2012 and began publishing it in a 2-in-1 omnibus format the following October.. The 11th volume, including volumes 21 and 22, shipped in December 2019. The manga has also been published in various foreign languages, including Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Polish, and French.
Vinland Sagame won the Grand Prize in the manga division at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival Awards in 2009 and 36th Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga in 2012.
